Chapter 38 - River Canyon

Scene: After rowing through the canyon, they approach the dock of Falco’s house, Gess hears a faint cry for help as she gets out of the boat. All three rush to the upper deck and find Falco lying there with an arrow in his gut.

  • Aiko: Are you Falco? Who shot you?

Falco: They have them in a torture camp. Must tell Ellia.

  • Scene: He looks over at Gess.

Falco: Seer, take my memories, they will show you where they are.

  • Scene: He reached out and took Gess’ hand. Her eyes became white while Falco’s memories of the torture camp filled her mind, as if they were her own. After they end in black, Falco dies. Shocked by the experience, Gess jumps back in confusion and then jumps off the deck and runs into the woods. Perplexed as well by what they just saw, Rey and Aiko watch her in confusion.

  • Rey: I’ll go check on her

  • Scene: On a bench near a creek, Rey finds Gess distressed over the new memories in her head

  • Rey: Hey sweety, how did you know to come here?

Gess: Falco would come here whenever he needed a peaceful place to think.

  • Rey: How would you know that you’ve never met him before today?

Gess: I don’t understand how, but when he touched my hand, his memories filled my head as if they were my own. I feel what he felt, I see what he saw. I know it sounds crazy. Rey, I don’t know what to do, I can’t make them go away.

  • Gess: The elves! We have to save the elves! There’s no time to get word to Ellia. We have to do it.

    Rey: What elves? Who’s Ellia?

Gess: The elves in the torture camp, it’s not far from here. Ellia was the elve being held prisoner in that wagon. Tobyn told us her plan to save the seers, remember? But there’s no time to find her, we have to save them.

Rey: Slow down Gess. Let’s just take a moment to understand first what’s going on with you. Watching what happened to you was pretty frightening. You became rigid and your eyes turned white, almost as if you were in a trance. We’ve seen a lot of strange things down here, but I’ve never seen anything like that before. I want to make sure you’re ok first before thinking about anyone else.

Gess: It was very frightening at first. I felt like someone was taking over my brain, like I had no control, and I was watching everything through there eyes. But it didn’t hurt me, I just didn’t understand what was happening. Rey, I’m starting to feel some kind of connection to something down here, like I’m joined to something. I know it doesn’t make sense, it’s just something I feel inside. Maybe I am a seer, whatever that means. But I do know that Falco died trying to save those elves, I saw it. And whether they’re his memory and feeling or not, I feel like we should try to save them.

  • Rey: I don’t pretend to think I understand any of this, it’s a lot to take in. But let’s head back to Aiko before she starts to get concerned.

  • Aiko: Are you ok? What happened?

  • Gess: Like I was telling Rey, it’s really hard to explain, but somehow Falco’s memories were transferred to me when he touched my hand. It was overwhelming at first, I didn’t understand what was happening, it was just so much information all at once. So, I ran. But once the memories started to become more quiet, only the ones that were really important to him are still very strong. The strongest one is the reason why he died. He was trying to save some elves that were being torture just over the next ridge. We need to finish what he started.

  • Aiko: Hold on. He gave you his memories? How do you just choose to give someone your memories?

  • Gess: I don’t understand how it happened, but somehow I now know things about his life that I couldn’t have known before. Like, hidden in the third drawer of his desk there is a false bottom where he hides a secret diary of all of the orcs movements in this area.

  • Scene: Rey steps inside his home and checks inside his desk, and sure enough, hidden below a false bottom was a diary. She brought it back and showed it to them.

  • Aiko: How? How?

Scene: Gess just shrugged her shoulders

  • Gess: I also know the path to take that leads to the Woodland Elves. It goes right past the place where they are torturing the elves. We need to save them. There are only 2 goblins there that the two of you could easily kill.

  • Aiko: I still don’t understand how you know all of this, or how you got Falco’s memories, but we already agreed that we weren’t going to involve ourselves in their war. Our time is very limited, and we need to stay focused on our task, not their struggles. Believe me, I would like to help, but we just don’t have the time.

  • Gess: Falco would have helped us if he were still alive. This isn’t out of our way and it won’t cause us to lose any time. After you kill the goblins, we can use their camp to spend the night and then we’ll be on our way.

  • Aiko: Rey?

  • Rey: I agree we don’t want to waste time, but if this camp is on our way, then I feel it is only right that we return the mercy that Tobyn showed us in helping us to get this far.

Aiko: Fine. But you will keep yourself hidden while we rescue the other elves.
